Committed Book Cover
This description contains spoilers for the book
As a repeat reader of Gilberts ‘Eat Pray Love’, I wanted to explore this sequel through Illustration, by crafting a book cover as a self initiated portfolio project.
In ‘Committed’, we see the author (an American) and her to be husband (a Brazilian previously living in Bali) embark on a turbulent journey, from the borders of the U.S.A., where they are told they can not return until they are married. They journey on an adventure moving around South East Asia, and finally settle in Bali, where the two originally met, while awaiting the marriage and visa paperwork to re-enter the U.S.A.
During this journey the author explores her own feelings on marriage and relationships, and the book culminates with the pair becoming husband and wife, in order to re-enter the U.S.A. where they hope to live.
For the cover, I wanted to incorporate motifs representing different elements of the story, arranging them in a way that suggests a journey from chapter one where we leave the U.S. border, to the final destination (the inevitable marriage), and set a tropical scene to emulate the South East Asian landscapes that set the backdrop for much of the book.
Working with the concept of using motifs to represent the story elements, I chose the concept and worked up a more detailed rough before developing colour and final artwork.
