Camping Recipes

This illustration featured as part of a creative design challenge set by Jessica (AKA Melosprout) over on instagram.

Wanting to incorporate more food illustration into my work, I felt drawn to the brief which was to illustrate a recipe card to the theme of ‘herbs’.

Leaning into the season of the time I landed on my final concept of illustrating this hot chocolate recipe, which incorporates some unusual herbs and spices.

As the piece was a standalone illustration I wanted to connect it topically with the rest of my work, so came up with the concept of illustrating the drink as a camping recipe, using the sky to set an outdoors backdrop, and the metal camping mug and small gas stove to suggest outdoor/campsite cooking.

Illustrating the individual ingredients to use as motifs, floating around and framing the cooking scene, I hoped to evoke thoughts of an aroma in the air, and the mixing of ingredients as they swirl together in the cooking pot, while also giving a clear visual of the ingredients to accompany a text list.
